Collection: Fika Time

Fika Time is an oil painting series inspired by the shared rituals of pausing, connecting, and caring across cultures. In Sweden, “fika” is a cherished moment of togetherness over coffee, a daily tradition of slowing down to enjoy each other’s company. In Japan, where I’m from, we say “Ocha shiyo” (“Let’s have tea”), a phrase that means far more than sharing a drink. It invites presence, storytelling, and intimacy.

In Japanese families, especially among women, these gatherings have long been a space where knowledge, care, and quiet strength are passed from one generation to the next. Around the table, mothers, daughters, and grandmothers share not just tea, but the unspoken threads of culture, memory, and womanhood.

This series explores how such simple act such as having tea or coffee carry generations of tradition, love, and human connection. In our fast-paced, tech-driven world, Fika Time invites the viewer to stop, reflect, and remember the beauty of slowing down to be with one another.
